This is Week 3 for Dezi!

This is week 3 for Dezi. He is doing great. Tonight he got his first full bath as his little belly button finally fell off. That also means that his "man parts" are healed as well. It is amazing how fast a diaper change can now be completed without needing to take special care of his "man parts". He sleeps well most of the time and seems to continue to be very calm. Dezi will definitely let you know when he is hungry, tired, or wants a diaper change. However, my thought is that he always wants to eat. I also still contend that we are very lucky that we can get 3 to 4 hours of sleep out of him from time to time. I completed my first attempt at video and just did a quick clip to try it out. I'm hoping to put something really good together as soon as I work on getting better with the software of editing and transitioning video. Enjoy this 8 second clip of Dezi.

It Has Been A Busy Week

Today is Thursday and tomorrow will be Friday and the completion of a week back to work. It has been a very busy week back to work. There doesn't seem to be enough time in the day for work or sleep. I had work events after work every night this week, which is typical for me during the last week of the month. It has been a challenge to say the least.
Melissa had her mother with her this entire week helping her around the house and keeping her company. She has been very helpful. They have taken Dezi out on the town a few times and he seems to enjoy getting out. I think he will really like it when the weather turns and it is warm outside. I'm ready for the warm weather for sure and I'm going to take advantage of getting Dezi out on walks.
I'm ready for the weekend to hopefully get a couple of hours of exercise for myself and spend some time with the boy. I have a yard project of putting mulch down and I would really like to get it done but I think it will be weather permitting this weekend. It is the end of March and they are talking about snow and cold temperatures. What happened to Spring!?

Back to Work for Papi

Dezi is a week and a couple of days old now. It has been great to spend the week at home with Dezi and mama. I am dreading going back to work and wondering what sleeping and eating patterns Dezi will be developing during the day. He seems to get better every night or maybe we are just used to not getting regular sleep. Tomorrow will be the test for me as I will have to actually wake up early and stay up and go to work. I'm trying to get myself back in the mode of selling and business development. It is a challenge for me. I'm going to play Power Ball this week and pray for a win so I can stay home and start my own business.

Dezi used his little crib this week that grandpa made for his mama when she was a baby. He doesn't sleep very long in it but we are going to work on getting him to take naps in it during the day. The little crib sits in the living room and has become another piece of furniture for us. Grandpa Phil made the crib over 3o years ago and it had been used by friends of the family over the years. We have since got the crib back and did some small repair and restoration to it and it looks brand new. I painted it to match the trim in the house and it fits in well. We hope that friends and family who come to visit with little ones will be able to use the crib as well.

Some Good Sleep Today

I would have to say today was a good day. At least it was better than the previous nights. Dezi slept well last night. We had only a couple of changes in the middle of the night. It was also a good day as we took him out with us to Baby's R Us to get him a swing. Hopefully this will allow us to put him in it during the day so that we may roam about the house and do some chores and eat.
Tomorrow is another day and this week has seemed to go by so quick. I'm really not looking forward to leaving mom and baby and go back to work. I feel like I'm going to be missing out on something why they get to eat and sleep all day. Tomorrow our plans are for another bath. I need one myself as we had a diaper malfunction today while Dezi was sleeping. I got a little wet but no harm done. Just added the shirt to the wash with all of the other dirty little man cloths.

Day 2 or 3?

I think it is day three now. All I can say is this kid is a eating machine. He is eating around the clock. Which is good and we couldn't be happier about it. Tonight is our first night alone with Dezi. Grandma went back home today. Melissa is missing her mom already and I can't blame her. It worked very well to have 6 hands changing diapers. I can say my two hands were on every diaper but one. Dezi's other grandma came over today to visit and Melissa got a couple of additional things done today with her spending time with Dezi. Did I mention I am sleepy because I'm not sure if it is day 2 or 3.

I think it is day three because today was our check up day at the pediatricians office. It went really well. Dezi had lost 3% of his 6lbs. and 10oz. at the hospital before we left. Since then he has gained all of it back. I was actually really surprised. We had some issues with feeding the first couple of days but I am amazed he is continuing to get enough from his mom. I am hoping he will continue to progress and we won't have to supplement any of his feeding. It is possible that it could happen though and I am mentally prepared. I'm not sure if mom is because she has her mind set on natures nourishment.
Dezi had his second car ride today and he did really well, he sleeps! We might venture out again tomorrow. He really likes it when I swing him to sleep when he is in his car seat. We got home and got a couple of hours rest as we left him in his seat for a short nap.

Dezi's Second Day at Home

Dezi's second day at home was pretty good. Melissa has done well with minimal to no sleep at all. She is feeding about every 2 hours and I am change a diaper about every 3 hours with the assistance of Grandma Sara. It takes a number of hands to change a diaper on a little boy who has to have a new dressing applied to his boy parts after every dirty diaper. I think frequent diaper changes is a sign he is getting what he needs from mom. Melissa slept in the reclining glider last night and I slept on the floor in the nursery. It was fine for the first night but I hope we are not going to make it a habit.

Dezi got his first bath today and he did really well. We thought that if we gave him a bath, got him worked up, and then fed him then he would be really tired and he would sleep for awhile (NOT!). Melissa tried to lay down with him in the bed and I was to sleep on the sofa. Dezi was up within 5 minutes and Melissa moved to the reclining glider and he was just fine. I am about 90% sure I will be on the floor, sleep deprived, and waiting to change a diaper. I have turned into a zombie. I keep reminding myself of all the sleepless nights I went through in college. Trust me when I tell you I had 5 weeks, 6 days, 23 hours, 36 minutes, and 11 seconds of absolute sleep deprivation and mad chaos. So I do have some point of reference.

I'm working on getting more pictures of the boy on here as time goes on. I'm also going to be working on trying to get some video down loaded as well. It is difficult to get a lot done with a newborn keeping you from the computer. Also, I would rather be sleeping right now.

Day 2 of Parenthood

We made it to day two of parenthood. We have not experienced much sleep but who said we would. Dezi and mom are continuing to do well. Feeding is still a work in progress and a challenge. He seems to have made some progress within the past 24 hours with his interest in feeding so we have made some strides. I'm hopeful that in a few days that it works itself out and he will get all that he needs.

We had plenty of visitors today and the room seemed to be a revolving door of family. We feel very blessed to have everyone stop by and see us. Tia Theresa and Tia Rita brought grandma Naomi over to see Dezi, who's middle name is after her late husband and our grandpa. I think grandpa would be very proud. We hope that all of our family is excited about the new addition and that our family in heaven is looking down on Dezi and is just as happy and excited as those of us who get to enjoy him today.

Baby Dezi Arrived

Today was a crazy day to say the least. It was amazing but started off pretty rough. We left to go to the hospital this morning by calling our doctor. He was not available so we got a returned from his "on call" physician. He said, "Sorry but St. Lukes South is full. We are going to have to send you to Shawnee Mission Med." We did not pre-register at Shawnee Med and the drama begain. I was so frustrated but knew we had to get to the hospital. When we arrived at the hospital they needed us to fill out paper work. We had contractions for the past hour and a half at less than three minutes apart. I told the administrative help someone else needs to fill it out because we are in labor.

We got to our room at 6:30am and we find out that neither of our doctors were going to be available. We got a doctor that we didn't know but she got the job done and we were very happy with her. Melissa dilated to a 7 before taking an epideral. After that things started to move pretty quickly. At least it seemed that way. I was on an adrinaline rush roller coaster as I pounded down a couple of 16 oz. Monster drinks. It did the trick. It was an exciting event. He arrived at 3:16 this afternoon. Dezi was 6lbs. 10oz. and 18.75 inches long. Seeing him born was the most amazing thing I have ever seen.

We are resting now and having Dezi's vitals checked. He is doing well. Breast feeding has been a challenge and I pray he is getting what he needs when he is being fed. I totally understand how women quit and go to formula. I have been doing what I can to support Melissa but I find myself getting frustrated and I'm not actively feeding him. I can't wait until he takes and he is actually getting what he needs.

I'm hoping we have a good night.

Is It Time!?

Melissa woke up at 3:40 this morning. I have been timing contractions. They started pretty quickly being 8 to 10 minutes apart and only about 30 to 40 seconds in duration. This went on for an hour so.. Is it time yet?
Maybe...we are heading to the hospital in a little bit.

Baby Room Pictures

We have gotten a lot of request for pictures of the baby room so I thought I would take some before Dezi arrives. You will have to imagine this room as a blank slate with only a desk and computer in it. The past three years this room served as our office. It was once a dark and drab and frankly quit gloomy. We painted, did the waynes coating bead board, put in additional ceiling lighting, and added a couple of pieces of furniture that I had as a child. We also used a couple of pieces of furniture from Melissa’s college days. I painted her old book case and end table to match the crib and dresser we got.

The chifarobe was my mother’s as a child and I then acquired it. When I was a kid it was painted red, white, and blue with a trunk to match. The chifarobe was in pretty bad shape. I had to strip the paint and repaint, do some structural work, and replace all of the wooden knobs with nickel plated hardware. The truck was once my grandfather’s from when he was in the Navy. My mother had the trunk as a child and I used it as a toy box and Boy Scout camp box. I painted it MU black and gold and added some Missouri flare for Dezi. The Missouri license plate on the front of it was from Melissa’s great grandmother’s car. I thought it was a nice touch.

Melissa spent a lot of time picking out the colors and theme of the room. I think it looks great. It is really warm and inviting. Melissa also spent a lot of time designing the closet for Dezi. It took just a couple of days to tear out the old shelf and clothing rod, repaint the inside, and install the new organized shelving. The waynes coating took me 10 hours from start to finish. We are really happy with it as Melissa wasn’t really sure about the idea when I first mentioned it. I’m hoping Dezi sleeps well in his new room!

Thank You for Your Thoughts and Prayers

Today is Dezi's due date. I'm not convinced he will be coming soon but it is inevitable. Melissa will have an appointment tomorrow and we should have an update on what will be the next steps if she does not go into labor in the next 24 hours. I will keep everyone posted as I will have the laptop with me. Maybe Melissa will allow me to report directly from the hospital and then possibly get some pictures out right away.
I wanted to thank you all for your continued thoughts and prayers. We feel very blessed to have everyone giving us support and love.
Stay tuned!

Just a Quick Update

This is just a quick update. Tomorrow the 12th is the actual projected due date of Dezi. For the most part Melissa has felt very well throughout her pregnancy. Though week 7 through week 15 were the most challenging Melissa has been fortunate to have a fairly good pregnancy and event free of complications. There have not been too many moments where she has been uncomfortable until just recently as Dezi continues to grow. Dezi should be of average size as two weeks ago he was estimated to be 6lbs. 11oz. If he gains a ounce a day then today he would approximately be 7 and a half pounds. The doctor said to give or take a half pound with the estimate.
As far as when will he come. I think Dezi may hold off until the 13th. At least that is my guess. Melissa thought maybe he would wait until the 16th. Today Melissa has had some deep pelvic pressure and feels as if Dezi continues to drop. In addition, he is still very active as he has been since week 20. Only time will tell if he makes our guesstimates or if the anticipated due date of the 12 will hold true.

Two Days Until......

Still playing the waiting game today. We are not sure if Dezi really wants to enter the world yet. I think he is just waiting for it to get warmer.
